Honors Wind Ensemble & Honors Choir

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the OU Honors Ensembles?
The Honors Wind Ensemble and Honors Choir at the University of Oklahoma cultivate musical performance by bringing honors music students to the university setting for professional development with artist faculty.  The musical and leadership level makes for a rich personal experience. Students from the ensembles will rehearse, attend master classes/sectional rehearsals with University faculty and perform a concert on the University of Oklahoma campus.

What kinds of students attend?
The ensembles are comprised of outstanding students, grades 9-12, invited to participate based on successful auditions for such honor groups as the All-OMEA and TMEA groups, all-region groups, or similar ensembles. Students attending in the past have not only represented the finest musical talent in Oklahoma and surrounding states, but have also been recipients of many academic and community leadership honors including National Merit Scholars, National Honor Society, John Philip Sousa Award, Who’s Who Among High School Students, State Science Fair finals, Interlochen Music Camp, American Legion Award, Girls State, Boys State, Model United Nations, Oklahoma City and Tulsa Youth Symphonies, Oklahoma Arts Institute students and many more.  In cases of vocal and instrumentation needs, other students who meet similar criteria will be eligible to participate.

What will the daily routine be like?
The schedule includes intensive music making in rehearsals with challenging repertoire.  The master classes/section rehearsals, guided by artist faculty, will address musical issues and pedagogical information about your instrument or voice. You will also have opportunities for recreation and social interaction.

Do I need to prepare an audition?
Students will be sent music from the concert repertoire. Wind Ensemble members will audition for part assignments on excerpts from selected literature. Choral and Wind Ensemble students are encouraged to prepare the music in order to provide the highest possible musical experience. Where possible in the Wind Ensemble, part rotation will provide students with leadership opportunities.

When is the application deadline?
Applications must be postmarked by June 8, 2010; however, depending on your instrument or voice type, section numbers may be limited. Sections will be filled as applications are received.

What is the cost of attending?
The total cost for the two-and-a-half days of instruction, housing in an OU dormitory and meals is $200.00. For those who wish to commute (no room or meals), the fee is $160.00. Commuters can also include a meal plan (lunch and dinner), for a total fee of $180.00. The dormitories at OU are air conditioned and the cafeteria offers a diverse menu (www.housing.ou.edu). Linens are included in the cost (bed linen, towel and washcloth). Students will be supervised by experienced residence hall advisors. A $100.00 deposit is required by June 8, 2010 to reserve a space in the ensemble. The balance is due at or before registration check-in on July 8, 2010.

Where is the camp held?
The three-day workshop will be held at the University of Oklahoma Catlett Music Center, located at 500 West Boyd in Norman, Oklahoma. City and campus maps may be downloaded at: www.cafe.ou.edu/maps.
