Honors Choir
Mark Lucas is currently an Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education and the Associate Director of Choral Activities at the University of Oklahoma, where he conducts the University Choir, the O.U. Men’s Choir, teaches choral conducting and courses in choral methods, and supervises student teachers.
Dr. Lucas received a degree in Music Education from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas and an M.M. in Choral Conducting from the University of Oklahoma. He received his Ph.D. in Choral Music Education from the University of Oklahoma. His dissertation, Adolescent Males’ Motivations to Enroll or Not Enroll in Choir, is a study of what factors influence young men in grades 7 and 8 to participate in choir.
Dr. Lucas is a frequent clinician and adjudicator for choral groups of all ages. He is the founder of the Young Men’s Vocal Workshop at the University of Oklahoma, which, each of the last two years has featured more than 700 young men in concert. He recently began the OU Men’s Choir, a group of 40-50 men drawn from the population of the University. The ensemble, formerly the Oklahoma Men’s Glee, had not been active at the university for over 30 years.
Previously, Mark served for four years as Director of Choral Activities at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas and taught vocal music to students in grades 6-12 in Marion, Kansas. Mark’s wife, Jeanne, is an extremely successful middle school vocal teacher in Norman. Mark and Jeanne have two boys, Matt (6) and Jake (5).
Honors Wind Ensemble
Dr. William K. Wakefield is director of Bands, Division Coordinator of Ensembles and Conducting, and Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma. His responsibilities include conducting the Wind Symphony and coordinating the doctoral and masters wind conducting programs, which were instituted in 1991. Since his appointment in 1985, the OU Wind Symphony has received acclaim for performances of standard and contemporary band literature while performing for fourteen national and regional conventions of the College Band Directors National Association, the American Bandmasters Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and Oklahoma Music Educators Association.
Dr. Wakefield is active as a clinician, lecturer, and guest conductor with All-State bands, region bands, and university ensembles throughout the United States. In 1998, Wakefield was elected to the American Bandmasters Association.
Brian Britt has been the associate diretor of Bands and director of the "Pride of Oklahoma" Marching Band at the University of Oklahoma since 2001. In this capacity he guides all aspects of the Pride including recruiting, teaching, charting drill, selecting shows, and administrative duties. Mr. Britt conducts the OU Symphony Band, and assists with the other concert ensembles as well. He is actively involved in the music education program as a conducting professor, teaches beginning percussion pedagogy, and teaches "Marching Band Techniques and Administration" to upper-level music education students.
Mr. Britt taught for nine years in the public schools of Oklahoma and Texas. His bands at South Garland High School and McNeil High School were both consistent UIL Sweepstakes recipients. His collegiate teaching experience includes four years as the Associate Director of Bands at Stephen F. Austin State University and one year as Interim Associate Director of Bands at Texas Christian University. While at SFASU, Mr. Britt was Director of the Lumberjack Marching Band and had an extensive role in the music education program, teaching courses in instrumental methods, marching band techniques, and conducting.
Mr. Britt, earned both his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music (percussion) degrees from the University of Oklahoma. His professional associations include the College Band Directors National Association, Oklahoma Bandmasters Association, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, Phi Beta Mu, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Kappa, Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Tau Beta Sigma (honorary), and Kiwanis International.
